GT World Challenge America Information
The GT World Challenge America is an auto racing series launched by the Sports Car Club of America in 1990. The series is managed by the Stephane Ratel Organisation since 2018 and sanctioned by the United States Auto Club since 2017. The GT World Challenge consists of four driver classifications and five classes of GT3, GT4 (West, East, SprintX, and Sprint), and Touring Car. The race takes place in the United States and Canada.
In 1972, the Sports Car Club of America created a class named “showroom stock” for amateur club racing. The series was officially named World Challenge in 1990, and it was restructured to adopt rules that are similar to the European Group A for homologated production cars. In 1999, Speed TV Network also began sponsoring the series. It began separate races for Touring classes and GT in 2000 that would remain until 2010. The World Challenge was purchased by WC Vision (a group of investors) in July 2008, but the Sports Car Club of America continued sanctioning the partner of the series.
The GT World Challenge signed a partnership with Pirelli at the starting of the 2011 season. The challenge also established a GT-A classification that was similar to the FIA’s bronze category in 2014. Champions of the race for 2019 include Toni Vilander (overall), Martin Barkey & Kyle Marcelli (Pro-Am Cup), and Martin Fuentes (Am Cup). The tire supplier for the GT World Challenge America is also Pirelli P Zero.
