Grand Prix of St. Petersburg Information
The Grand Prix of St. Petersburg is one of many IndyCar Series races specifically hosted in Saint Petersburg, Florida. Since 2009, the event has typically been the opening race of the season or at least the first race to be hosted in the U.S. The spring race is an annual event. William T. McVey, a member of the SCCA and IMSA and president of the Tampa-based McBri Corporation, was in charge of the first race in 1985. From 1985 to 1990, a downtown waterfront track in St. Petersburg served as the site of races in the SCCA Trans-Am Series.
Downtown streets and one runway at Albert Whitted Airport make up the temporary route of the event. The race has been going strong since 1985, although IndyCars didn't debut until 2003. Returning in 2005, the race became the first non-oval event for the Indy Racing League, switching to the IndyCar Series. The addition of the American Le Mans Series race to the 2007 race weekend enlarged the scope of the event.
With 27 full-time competitors, the 2022 St. Petersburg Grand Prix set a new record for most entrants. Romain Grosjean was the first qualifier. Racing resumed after an early red flag was thrown due to a five-car pileup on the first lap. With over half of the field retiring owing to collisions, the incident-filled race was won by Ericsson. Scott Dixon came in third, while O'Ward took second. After a year without a pole position, Josef Newgarden finally got revenge in 2024 in St. Petersburg.
