Grand Prix of Portland Information
Indy Car Series races often visit Portland, Oregon's Portland International Raceway, for the Grand Prix of Portland. From 1984 through 2007, the race was part of the CART series and the Champ Car World Series. The race was added back to the IndyCar Series for the 2018 season after being absent for the previous decade.
Two of the closest finishes ever seen in an Indy car race on a road course occurred in Portland. During the 1986 Indianapolis 500, Michael Andretti's fuel pressure let up on the final turn of the final lap, allowing Mario Andretti to catch up and win by 0.070 seconds. An Indy car race had just the closest finish ever recorded at the time. Mark Blundell won the 1997 event with a 0.027-second advantage over Gil de Ferran, who came in second, and a 0.055-second advantage over Raul Boesel, who came in third. It was the closest finish ever for a road track race in the CART series and the closest finish for three cars overall.
The race has been associated with the Portland Rose Festival and has had G.I. Joe's as its title sponsor. On numerous occasions, the race was held in honor of Dad. In 2018, Green Savoree Racing Promotions moved the race to the Labor Day weekend in September.
