The Florida Atlantic Owls football team competes in American football for Florida Atlantic University (FAU). The Owls are a member of the American Athletic Conference (American/AAC), which is part of the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Willie Taggart led the Owls as head coach from 2020 to 2022.
Florida Atlantic produced a Sun Belt Conference co-championship squad in 2007, two Conference USA crowns in 2017 and 2019, four postseason bowl appearances, and one appearance in the 2003 I-AA Playoffs. The Owls' home games are played atFAU Stadium, which can accommodate 29,419 spectators. The annual showdown with Florida International is known as the Shula Bowl.
It debuted in 2002 and has since been held annually. The Don Shula Award is given to the victor. The game and the trophy are named for Don Shula, a former coach for the Miami Dolphins. Boca Raton and Miami are the two most common sites for the game. However, other cities in the Miami vicinity have also played host. Fifteen players from Florida Atlantic have been recognized as All-Americans, including ten unanimous selections and one consensus selection.
