The Fayetteville Woodpeckers play in the Carolina League and are the Houston Astros' Single-A affiliate. Their home field is Segra Stadium in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The Buies Creek Astros were the team's name from 2017 to 2018. Their home field was Jim Perry Stadium, which is located on the Campbell University campus in Buies Creek, North Carolina.
The Fayetteville City Council has given the go-ahead for a new stadium to be constructed by 2019. Because of this, the club had to locate a temporary home for the 2017 and 2018 seasons. On November 17, the announcement that the team would play its first two seasons at Jim Perry Stadium on the Campbell University campus in Buies Creek and be called the Buies Creek Astros was made public.
The Woodpeckers were placed in the Low-A East after Major League Baseball reorganized Minor League Baseball in 2021. The Carolina League was the regional circuit's traditional name before the reorganization. In 2022, the Low-A East was renamed the Carolina League.
