Eastern Kentucky Colonels Football Information
The Eastern Kentucky Colonels football team participates in NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). It represents Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) in college football through the 2020-21 season as a member of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC). On the football field, the school has a long history of success, winning 21 OVC conference titles and two Division I FCS National Championships (then known as Division I-AA) in 1979 and 1982, as well as reaching the finals in 1980 and 1981. Much of the team's success stemmed from Roy Kidd's long career as head coach, which lasted from 1964 to 2002. Eastern University named its football stadium Roy Kidd Stadium in his honor in 1990. Eastern Kentucky's football team had 31 consecutive successful seasons before succumbing to adversity.
The Lexington Herald-Leader, a daily newspaper in neighboring Lexington, reported in September 2013 that EKU was considering elevating its football program to the Football Bowl Subdivision.
In July 2021, EKU departed the OVC for the ASUN Conference. Although the ASUN does not officially sponsor football, it has stated that it will do so shortly. Until ASUN football is founded, EKU will be a de facto associate member of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), competing in the "ASUN–WAC Challenge," a football partnership between the two organizations.
