East-West Shrine Game Information
The East-West Shrine Bowl operates as a postseason college football all-star game that has been held annually since 1925; it was previously known as the East-West Shrine Game until January 2019. The game is sponsored by the Shriners International fraternal organization, with the net revenues going to some of the Shrine's philanthropic endeavors, most notably the Shriners Hospitals for Children, with the tagline "Strong Legs Run, Weak Legs Walk."
Teams are made up of players from colleges in the Eastern and Western United States. Players must be seniors in college who are eligible to play for their respective schools. Hundreds of scouts from professional teams attend the game, and the practice sessions run-up. Since 1985, players from Canadian university football teams have been invited (even though U Sports and the NCAA play by different football codes).
As a result, this is the only bowl or all-star game currently on the Canadian or American college football schedules that include players from both countries. Since 1979, the game has been held in January, and since 1986, it has been held on January 10th or later. The later game dates allow players from teams that competed in bowl games to participate, which is essential because these teams often have some of the finest players in the country.
