East Carolina Pirates Football Information
The East Carolina Pirates football team competes for East Carolina University (often referred to as "East Carolina" or "ECU"). The squad competes in the NCAA's Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (previously known as Division I-A), where it is a member of the American Athletic Conference. Coach Mike Houston leads the team. In the fall of 1932, East Carolina began a formal football program. Kenneth Beatty was the first football coach in the school's history.
The Pirate is the school's unofficial mascot. From 1983 until Chancellor Howell changed the name in December 1985, it was known as PeeDee the Pirate. After debuting a new look for the Pirate for the 2008 homecoming football game versus the Marshall Thundering Herd, the university again embraced PeeDee, the Pirate.
The 2001 GMAC Bowl between East Carolina and Marshall will always be remembered as a classic due to the teams' record-setting 125 total points. In double overtime, Marshall beat East Carolina 64-61 after rallying from a 30-point deficit. After uncertainty caused by East Carolina's move to the American Conference in 2014, the two teams have scheduled a home-and-home series for 2021 and 2023.
