Detroit Grand Prix Information
The Detroit Grand Prix is an IndyCar Series race weekend hosted on a temporary track in Detroit, Michigan. The event was held from 1989 until 2001, 2007, and 2008, and again beginning in 2012. The weekend following the Indianapolis 500 has been the event's permanent home since 2012.
The event's roots may be traced back to the Formula One Detroit Grand Prix, held annually on the Detroit street circuit. In 1989, the CART series took over as the main attraction, and in 1992, the race was moved to Belle Isle, a park located on an island in the Detroit River. After 2007, the event was run by the IndyCar Series. Top-tier sports car series like the Trans-Am Series and the American Le Mans Series have shown their support for the race. In 2023, the race will return to the streets of downtown Detroit, centering on the Renaissance Center, utilizing a course inspired in part by the original Detroit street circuit utilized by Formula One and CART.
From the 1920s to the 1950s, AAA hosted the Detroit 100 at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Speedway, establishing the city as a center for open-wheel racing. In 1905, AAA also hosted a non-championship, five-mile (8-kilometer) race in Grosse Pointe.
