Copa America Information
The most prestigious men's football competition in South American history is the CONMEBOL Copa América. It ranks third in global viewership and is the longest-running continental football tournament. This competition decides the South American champions. Inviting teams from Asia and North America to compete has been a tradition since the 1990s. Twelve teams have competed in the event annually since 1993, with ten representing CONMEBOL and two representing other confederations rounding out the field.
The United States will play host to the 2024 Copa América, a tournament featuring six CONCACAF nations, as part of a cooperative cooperation deal agreed in January 2023 between CONMEBOL and CONCACAF. The 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the US plans to co-host with France, will use several locations for this tournament.
Ernesto Bosch, Argentina's Minister of Foreign Affairs, presented the Copa América trophy to the Association in 1910 as part of a celebration marking the 100th anniversary of the May Revolution. The trophy is presented to the winning team in the tournament. The "Copa del Centenario" (Centennial Cup) was the tournament's name, which Uruguay and Chile also participated in. In 1916, the present Copa América trophy was bought from a Buenos Aires jewelry store called "Casa Escasany" for three thousand Swiss francs.
