Columbia Fireflies Information
Based in Columbia, South Carolina, the Columbia Fireflies play in Minor League Baseball as the Single-A affiliate of the Major League Baseball club, the Kansas City Royals. Following the 2004 season, the Capital City Bombers relocated to Greenville, South Carolina, leaving Columbia with just one professional baseball team. The third game for the Fireflies was the no-hitter.
With 9,077 fans in attendance, the Fireflies cruised to a 4-1 victory over the Greenville Drive on April 14, 2016, marking their inaugural home game. The Mets severed ties with Columbia in 2021 when Major League Baseball reorganized the minor leagues.
Major League Baseball announced on December 9, 2020, that the Kansas City Royals would take over as the parent club of the Fireflies starting from the 2021 season. As the Royals' low-A affiliate, the Fireflies were organized into the Low-A East. After the regional circuit changed its name in 2021, the Low-A East continued using it in 2022. This new name was the Carolina League.
