Club Leon Information
Club León, or just León, is a professional football club headquartered in León, Guanajuato, that competes in the Liga MX, Mexico's top division. León has won the Primera División de México/Liga MX eight times. In 1949, it became the first Mexican campeonsimo after winning the League and the México Cup.
In 1993, León finished second in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. It is only the second Mexican club to win consecutive championships. In 1998, the team qualified for the Champions League but was ousted in the semi-finals. Since 2002, the team has been a perennial challenger for the Primera División. Despite outstanding achievements during the regular season, it failed to join the Primera División owing to a succession of dismal playoff performances until the 2012 Clausura tournament.
After overcoming Correcaminos UAT ten years later, León was promoted to the Primera División. It won the championship in the Apertura 2013 with a 5–1 victory over América, earning its sixth championship star. It won Clausura 2014 for the second year, defeating Pachuca 4–3 to earn its seventh championship star. In the IFFHS Central and North America's Best Clubs of the 20th Century, León is ranked No. 29.
