City of Palms Basketball Classic Information
Fort Myers, Florida, hosts the City of Palms Classic, a high school basketball tournament. In its original incarnation, the event featured seven high school teams competing in a basketball tournament in 1973. Some of the best teams in the state, such as those from Lakeland High, Brandon, Pompano Beach, Glades Central, and Okeechobee, were included in the initial issues, which focused mostly on schools within the Fort Myers News-Press' high school coverage region.
A Fort Myers homeowner named Bill Pollock, whose son John was a senior-to-be at Fort Myers High School, and the preps editor of the News-Press, Donnie Wilkie, were engaged with the tournament that year. Since then, they've worked together, and the tournament, sponsored by Bank of America (previously Barnett Bank and NationsBank), has grown into a big national event.
The tournament's early success can be traced back to a thrilling, triple-overtime championship game in 1989, won by Flint Hill School over Abraham Lincoln High School on a last-second 3-pointer by Childress.
After defeating Paul VI High School in the championship game, Montverde Academy became the first school to win the City of Palms Classic tournament back-to-back years since the tournament began, including teams from beyond the local area in 2013. Stars like Dakari Johnson (2012), D'Angelo Russell (2012-13), and Ben Simmons (2012-14) guided Montverde to two championships (2013). Wheeler High School and its standout player, Jaylen Brown, prevented Montverde from making it a three-peat in the 2014 championship game.
