Canadian Grand Prix Information
The Canadian Grand Prix, in English, has been running since 1961 as an annual motor racing event. The show originated in Canada. Since 1967, it has been a regular event on the Formula One World Championship circuit. Before Formula One took over, it was a sports car race held at Mosport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario.
When the Canadian Grand Prix began in 1961 at Mosport Park outside of Toronto, it was also the opening race of a new racing series called the Canadian Sports Car Championship. Mosport Park (which still uses its original layout) was a breathtaking and challenging track with many twists and turns.
Mosport became the permanent home of the Grand Prix due to safety concerns after 1971. Since its relocation from Mosport to Montreal, Quebec's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Notre Dame Island in 1978, the Canadian Grand Prix has been hosted there.
For the first five years of the race's history, the champions all had Formula One experience or had entered the series after taking first at the Canadian Grand Prix.
The 2005 Formula One Canadian Grand Prix attracted the most viewers anywhere in the globe. Regarding viewership, the race beat out the Super Bowl and the UEFA Champions League Final that year.
