BMW Championship Information
The BMW Championship is the second-to-last PGA Tour's FedEx Cup playoffs tournament. The BMW Championship replaced the Western Open when it debuted in 2007. The BMW Championship is organized by the same group that created and managed the Western Open: the Western Golf Association. The BMW Championship was selected as the PGA Tour's Tournament of the Year in 2012, 2013, and 2014. The BMW Championship has been held continuously longer than any other regular PGA Tour event outside the four majors.
In 1899, 124 years ago, the first Western Open tournament was held. The Western was performed throughout Illinois for a long time until it settled in the Chicago area. The Western Open was organized and operated by the Western Golf Association (WGA) from its inception in 1899 until 2006. However, each competition's game rules and eligibility requirements are very diverse.
After the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the PGA Tour's top FedEx Cup point scorers are invited to play in the BMW Championship. The best 70 players up to 2022 qualified, then the cutoff was lowered to the top 50. A 36-hole cutoff is not played because of the small field size. After the BMW Championship, the top 30 players in the FedEx Cup standings proceed to The Tour Championship, where the winner is determined.
