The Black-Eyed Susan Stakes is an annual dirt race at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, conducted for three-year-old fillies of Grade II American Thoroughbred status. The race is conducted for over a mile. The prize pool for this tournament is $250,000 as of right now. Originally held in 1919 under the name Pimlico Oaks, the race was rechristened to its current name in 1952 to reflect better its connection to the Preakness Stakes and the state flower of Maryland.
Based on the records the Maryland Jockey Club kept, twenty-three of the fillies that triumphed in The Black-Eyed Susan went on to be designated Champions. No filly has ever won more than one major race, and Davona Dale is the first to do so. She won the Black-Eyed Susan, Kentucky Oaks, Acorn, Mother Goose, and Coaching Club American Oaks. Nobody except Nellie Morse has won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes.
In 2020, Pimlico announced that the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes would be contested on the same card as the Preakness Stakes instead of on Friday, shifting the race to the main NBC telecast. This was done since all the Preakness Stakes ran behind closed doors. In 2020, the event was formally changed to the George E. Mitchell Stakes in honor of the late Park Heights community leader who had passed away that year. The change took place on October 1, 2020.
