Big 12 Football Championship Information
College football's Big 12 Conference crowns its champion and runner-up each year in the Big 12 Championship Game. The game has been played annually since the conference's inception in 1996 until the 2010 season and again beginning with the 2017 season. After the regular season concluded in the Big 12 from 1996-2010, the North Division champion faced off against the South Division champion in the championship game. Starting in 2017, the conference champions faced each other in this game.
The ACC and the Big 12 drafted a bill to deregulate conference championship games in April 2015. Officials from the NCAA stated it was anticipated to pass before the 2016 season began. A conference with fewer than twelve teams can hold a championship game between the top two if they play a round-robin schedule, per legislation passed on January 14, 2016.
All four original members and seven other teams competed in the Big 12 Championship Game. Only Kansas, Texas Tech, and West Virginia have never qualified from among the current members who have played at least one conference season. As of July 2023, the Big 12 now included BYU, Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF. In 2024, the Big 12 will welcome new members Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah, as well as the return of Colorado.
