Bayou Classic Information
The Bayou Classic is a yearly college football grudge game between the Southern University Jaguars and the Grambling State University Tigers. It was first held at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans in 1974 under that name, but the series has continued since 1932. The school that comes out on top receives a trophy.
It ran on NBC across the United States from 1991 to 2014. In the world of historically black college and university (HBCU) football, it is the most famous annual matchup and rivalry. The Bayou Classic moved back to NBC after airing on NBCSN from 2015 until NBCSN's shutdown at the end of 2021.
Regularly shown on television was only one game—the Bayou Classic—from the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I Football Championship Subdivision. Although neither institution formally uses the term "Black Super Bowl" because of NFL regulations prohibiting the "Super Bowl" moniker, fans have called it by that name.
The number of attendees has been steadily increasing since 2011 and is once again close to what it was before Hurricane Katrina. Even though NBC temporarily switched the game's broadcast to its former sibling sports-only network from 2015 to 2021, it is still telecast nationally.
