AutoZone Liberty Bowl Information
The Autozone Liberty Bowl is an annual college football bowl game played every year in late December or early January. The game has been played since 1959, originally at the Philadelphia Municipal Stadium, Philadelphia. Later, it was taken to the Atlantic City (New Jersey) Convention Hall in 1964. The game has taken place at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis, Tennessee, since 1965. AutoZone is a Memphis-based auto part retailer, and they have been sponsoring the game since 2004. Due to this sponsorship, the bowl is officially known as the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.
The AutoZone Liberty Bowl’s previous sponsors include AXA Financial (1997-2003) and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (1993-1996). The Liberty Bowl was created by A.F. “Bud” Dudley, a former Villanova athletic director. The game was created in 1959 in Philadelphia.
Dudley moved the Liberty Bowl in 1965 to Memphis, Tennessee. The game has been there for so long that the venue was eventually renamed Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in December 1975. Most appearances in the game have been made by Arkansas (5), Ole Miss (4), and Louisville (4).
