AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am Information
An annual PGA Tour professional golf tournament, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am is played in Pebble Beach, California, near Carmel. Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill Golf Course, and Monterey Peninsula Country Club are the typical venues for the tournament, which takes place in February.
This tournament has a long history under two names: the Crosby Clambake and the Bing Crosby National Pro-Amateur. The Crosby family hosted the event for eight years after Crosby passed away in 1977. 1986, AT&T Corporation took over as the title sponsor, replacing the Crosby name used since 1985. The Monterey Peninsula Foundation is in charge of its organization.
There are 80 pros and 80 amateurs in the starting field. A pair of amateurs are assigned to each professional. Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill host the first two rounds of the first two-day tournament, which features 80 two-person teams playing a better ball style. The pros also use an individual stroke play format.
The event is one of the most recognizable on the PGA Tour. Yet, many of the best players avoid it yearly due to the lengthy rounds, the presence of famous people, the unpredictable weather, and the rough poa annual greens. Also, players have had difficulty competing at Pebble because of the calendar since the tournament was up against Saudi International, which also had a world-class field.
For sponsorship reasons, Pebble Beach is contractually scheduled to host the few elite players who used to compete there frequently, including Jordan Spieth.
