Arlington Million Information
In the United States, the Arlington Million is a Grade 1 flat horse event for thoroughbred horses aged three and higher. It is run on the turf at Arlington Park in Arlington Heights, Illinois, every August over around 2,000 meters. The Arlington Million was the first thoroughbred event in the United States to offer a purse of one million dollars. It's part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge series, and the winner automatically qualifies for the Breeders' Cup Turf.
Joe Joyce, the father of TVG's Mike Joyce and the president of Arlington Park, introduced the Arlington Million in 1981. The winner takes home 60% of the million-dollar prize pool and the Arlington Million Trophy. After only its second running, the race was assessed and, in 1983, given a grade one status based on the talent of the runners who competed in the first two years.
John Henry, the horse, won the event twice. John Henry won the inaugural Arlington Million by a nose against The Bart on August 30, 1981, with Willie Shoemaker being the first jockey to win a $1 million thoroughbred horse race. After a fire at the grandstand 25 days prior, the track notably ran the Arlington Million in 1985 under a burnt-out grandstand. Jambalaya was the first Canadian-bred horse to win the Arlington Million in 2007, and his trainer, Catherine Day Phillips, was the first female trainer to do it.
