Arkansas State University's football team competes in Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) collegiate football competition for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Arkansas State University was founded in 1911 and has competed in the Sun Belt Conference since 2001. On-campus in Jonesboro, Centennial Bank Stadium is their home field, and their head coach is Butch Jones.
The Red Wolves have won almost 450 games, appeared in seven bowl games, and won 11 conference championships in 105 seasons of football. Arkansas State's most recent conference title was in 2016, when they won their fifth in as many years. The Arkansas State Indians were the team's name until 2008.
Arkansas State University was formed in 1909, and its first football team was fielded two years later. Due to the First World War, the squad was temporarily disbanded in 1918. Arkansas State was not a member of any conference until 1929, when it became a member of the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference. Arkansas State was a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association from 1937 until 1953. (NJCAA).
On December 12, 2020, Butch Jones was named the Red Wolves' head coach. Jones had held head coaching positions at Central Michigan, Cincinnati, and Tennessee and served as a special assistant to Alabama's Nick Saban before his hiring at Arkansas State.
