Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta Information
Every year, Albuquerque, New Mexico, hosts the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in the first few days of October. The Balloon Fiesta started as the centerpiece of 770 KOB Radio's 50th birthday celebration. Sid Cutter, proprietor of Cutter Flying Service and the first person to possess a hot air balloon in New Mexico, was asked by radio station manager Dick McKee if KOB may utilize his new hot air balloon as part of the celebrations.
The Balloon Fiesta is an annual nine-day festival in the first full week of October. It has expanded to some great levels since its inception in 1972, when there were only 13 hot air balloons.
The León International Balloon Festival in Mexico and the Grand Est Mondial Air in France are the next two biggest balloon festivals in the world, after Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.
For many years, the Balloon Fiesta grew yearly and is now the biggest balloon event in the world. The Balloon Fiesta Board decided to reduce the number of registered balloons to 750 as of 2001 after the number peaked at 1,019 in 2000. Balloon Fiesta Park is on the city's northern outskirts, where the balloons are released. The park is a multi-use area that hosts numerous other events year-round.
