Since its inception in 1924, the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSA) has served as a federation member, overseeing all state public school athletic programs and activities. At the AHSAA Basketball State Finals—now called the Final 48—teams from the boys' and girls' basketball programs play their way through a series of bracket games culminating in a championship game.
The Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex's Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama, is the usual venue for the event. In most cases, the semi-finals will continue until the end of February, allowing the finals to begin in early March.
