Zal Sissokho Information
Musician and composer Zal Sissokho was born in Senegal and currently resides in Montreal, Quebec. At the 42nd annual Félix Awards, his album Kora Flamenca, which he released in 2020, explored the confluence of African kora with Spanish flamenco and was named World Music Album of the Year. The album received the 16th Canadian Folk Music Award for World Music Album of the Year and was nominated for the corresponding Juno Award at the upcoming 2021 Juno Awards.
Having relocated to Canada in 1999, Sissokho formed the band Buntalo in 2004. His music is influenced by the griot style of West African music and storytelling. He has also recorded with Buntalo (with whom he has published three albums) and the musical duo of Marcus Viana and Ibrahima Gaye (with whom he has recorded one album).
