Yoko Maria Information
Japanese vocalist Yoko-Maria was one of the first musicians to bring Finnish vocal music to Japan, and she has a large following in Japan thanks to her performances of Finnish Lieder. In addition to Japanese music, she sings Russian love ballads, German Lieder, French and Italian art songs, operatic arias, and more. She attended the undergraduate and graduate programs at Tokyo College of Music, where she excelled academically and graduated first in her class of performers in 2002.
She is a multiple-time national and international voice competition winner. She stayed in Finland and worked with Jorma Hynninen on her vocals for a long time. Yoko Maria regularly presents concerts in the Japanese capital in the Suntory Hall, the Kioi Hall, and the Tokyo Opera City. On December 15, 2010, she performed at Carnegie Hall for the first time in the United States. The conductor, Kent Nagano, is related to her.
Yoko Maria's unique crossover style incorporates the classical Lieder and opera arias she is known for, film music, and jazz. She has recently been featured on a house compilation of music from Studio Ghibli, and her debut album, "Ave Maria - Eternal Love," is a mix of classical and crossover tunes. On May 21, 2018, Yoko Maria and Dutch composer/pianist Gijs van Winkelhof performed at Carnegie Hall.
