Yamandu Costa Information
Yamandu Costa (January 24, 1980) is a Brazilian composer and guitarist. He primarily plays the classical guitar with seven strings from Brazil. At the ripe old age of seven, Costa started studying guitar with his father, Algacir Costa, leader of the group Os Fronteiriços (The Frontiersmen), and later went on to master the instrument by studying with Lcio Yanel, an Argentine virtuoso who made Brazil his home.
Costa started learning about the traditional music of southern Brazil and the music of Argentina and Uruguay when he was fifteen years old. He started listening to the music of other Brazilian composers like Baden Powell de Aquino, Tom Jobim, and Raphael Rabello after being inspired by Radamés Gnattali. His first professional performance was at the Cultural Circuit Bank of Brazil in Sao Paulo, organized by Study Tone Brazil, when he was just 17 years old.
Chorinho, bossa nova, milonga, tango, samba, and chamamé are just a few of Costa's many musical genres. Costa was featured in Brasileirinho, a 2005 documentary directed by Mika Kaurismäki. The Sao Paulo Association of Art Critics ranked his record Vento Sul among the top 25 Brazilian releases of the second quarter of 2019. He shared the Latin Grammy for Best Instrumental record in 2021 with Toquinho for their record Toquinho e Yamandu Costa - Bachianinha (Live at Rio Montreux Jazz Festival).
