Edward Albee's play Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? premiered in October 1962. It looks at Martha and George, a middle-aged couple, and all their challenges throughout their marriage. One night after a faculty party at the university, they unknowingly invite Nick and Honey, a younger couple, to spend the night as their guests.
The three-act play has two 10-minute intermissions and often runs for under three hours. A play on Walt Disney's Three Little Pigs (1933) and its song "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?" here Virginia Woolf's name is substituted for the wolf's. Throughout the play, Martha and George sing this particular song rendition.
Virginia Woolf: Who's Afraid of Her? received the 1962 New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play and the 1963 Tony Award for Best Play. On the contemporary theater scene, it is frequently remounted. The film version, starring Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, George Segal, and Sandy Dennis, was released in 1966, written by Ernest Lehman, and directed by Mike Nichols.
