For the men's basketball teams in the Western Athletic Conference, the season culminates at the Western Athletic Conference Tournament. (WAC). Although the Western Athletic Conference was established in 1962, the WAC Tournament has only been played annually since 1984. The champion will earn an automatic bid to the following year's NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. Throughout its existence, the conference has been held both on college campuses and at neutral locations.
From its inception in 1984 through 1992, the regular season winner hosted the tournament. However, in 1993 and 1994, the tournament was moved to Salt Lake City, where it was played at the Delta Center (now Vivint Arena). Although it was less than five miles from the University of Utah, a conference member at the time, the location was still deemed neutral. From 1995-2009, the tournament was held on-campus once again, though the venue was chosen via a sealed-bid auction rather than going to the regular-season victor.
In 2010, the competition returned to a neutral location, this time Orleans Arena in Paradise, Nevada. The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) implemented a new seeding method for its tournament in 2023 based on sophisticated team metrics created largely by Ken Pomeroy, a renowned statistician. Conference records will continue to determine who advances to the postseason tournament.
