Vanessa Carlton (August 16, 1980) is an American singer-songwriter from Milford, Pennsylvania. Her music is pop and pop-rock. She first developed an interest in music from an early age; at only 2, she played "It's a Small World" on the piano after returning from Disneyland Park. She was then taught by her mother, a school music teacher, and a pianist. At a young age, Carlton was introduced to classical music and enrolled in the School of American Ballet at 14. After graduation, Carlton began performing locally at nightclubs in the community.
In 2001, Carlton was signed to A&M records, which marked the beginning of her professional career. Some of her initial songs that were reworked are "Carnival," "Rinse," "Ordinary Days," "Twilight," and "Pretty Baby." Be Not Nobody was the first album by Carlton that was released in 2002. "A Thousand Miles" was the first hit song by Carlton that peaked in the top five of the Billboard Hot 100 and became the sixth-most-played song of the year. The song also garnered three Grammy Awards nominations.
Some of the other notable studio albums by Carlton are Harmonium (2004), Heroes & Thieves (2007), Rabbits on the Run (2011), Liberman (2015), and Love Is an Art (2020). Two of the compilation albums by Carlton are Icon: Best of Vanessa Carlton in 2011 and Double Live & Covers in 2018. She also released two live albums; Liberman Live 2016 and Earlier Things Live 2017. Her three extended plays are Ordinary Day 2002, Hear the Bells 2012, and Blue Pool EP 2015.
