Vancouver Symphony Orchestra Information
Vancouver, British Columbia, is home to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO), a Canadian orchestra. This orchestra has called the Orpheum home since 1977. It has the greatest yearly operational budget for a performing arts group in Western Canada at $16 million, making it the third-largest symphony orchestra in Canada. Around 140 concerts are given each year. CBC airs the VSO every year as part of its annual programming schedule.
The VSO School of Music, founded in September 2011, is the orchestra's educational arm. Pyatt Hall, located on the VSO School of Music campus, regularly hosts chamber music performances by VSO performers. The Vancouver Symphony Society, led by Elisabeth (Mrs. B.T.) Rogers, a philanthropist and supporter of the arts established the modern VSO in 1919. In 1897, Adolf Gregory founded a separate orchestra with the same name; it lasted only one season before disbanding. Charles Ward revived the orchestra for a short time in 1907.
Henry Green was the VSO's inaugural conductor, while F.L. Beecher and Rogers were its first president and vice president. The orchestra folded in 1921 after only two seasons due to financial difficulties and Green's departure. In 1930, again primarily due to Rogers, performances resumed under the baton of music director Allard de Ridder. The orchestra played in the Georgia Auditorium in the 1940s and continued until 1959 when it relocated to the brand-constructed Queen Elizabeth Theatre.
