Regarding competitive wrestling, USA Wrestling is the national governing body and the official representation of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) and United World Wrestling (UWW).
The current membership of USA Wrestling exceeds 159,000 people, including wrestlers, coaches, officials, state federations, and others who are enthusiastic about the sport. The organization is led by a board of directors consisting of the current president, the immediate past president, two vice presidents, a secretary, a treasurer, and other members such as current wrestlers, representatives from the Kids and Junior Divisions, the chairman of the state chairmen's council, and representatives from the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the National High School Athletic Association, the National Junior College Athletic Association, the National Wrestling Coaches Association, the Armed Forces Sports Council, and the United States

The different state federations are the backbone of USA Wrestling, as they organize tournaments and dual meets across the country and enforce rules for freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling.
