Dancers competing in Dancesport are called Athletes. According to the USA Dance Rulebook, "professional dancers" are not permitted to participate in Dancesport. The designation was made to gain acceptance into the Olympic Games. In 1909, the first Dancesport unofficial world final was held. In 1960, it made its broadcast debut. In 1997, Dancesport was officially acknowledged by the Olympic Committee thanks to the work of the World Dancesport Federation.
The American Style routines performed at the National Ballroom Dancesport Championships fall into American Rhythm and American Smooth. Additionally, there is the International Style, which has its quirks and can be subdivided into International Standard and International Latin.
The cha cha cha, rumba, bolero, mambo, and East Coast wing are all examples of American Rhythm dances. The samba and the West Coast swing may be included as well. Open and closed figures are used in the American Smooth dance forms, including waltz, tango, foxtrot, and Viennese waltz.
