US Air Force Band Information
The United States Air Force Band has the youngest average age among the military bands headquartered in the nation's capital. Beginning its military service on 24 September 1941, the Bolling Army Air Forces Band was founded by Lieutenant L.P. Holcomb, the Air Base Group CO at Bolling Field.
From 1941 through 1944, Alf Heiberg was the band's commander. Four musicians made up the original ensemble, but by year's end in 1942, there were 100 members. The band embarked on a nationwide tour, stopping at fairs and stadiums to perform for crowds.
Heiberg created a cap insignia featuring the pilots' wings with a musical lyre placed on them so that the band's uniformed members could be easily identified. The United States Air Force Band has used this emblem throughout its existence.
American Air Force Chief of Music and Bands, Colonel George S. Howard. George S. Howard was appointed Commander and Conductor in 1944, a role he would hold for the next two decades. While the Royal Air Force Band was touring the United States in 1944, he took the band on its first foreign tour, performing in England and France. For the first time, The Army Air Forces Band performed in locations outside of North America during this trip.
