Trevor Pinnock Information
Trevor David Pinnock (December 16, 1964) is a British conductor and harpsichordist from Canterbury. The Pinnock family used to live near the pianist Ronald Smith, whose sister provided piano lessons to Trevor. He attended choir school from 1956 to 1961, where he became a chorister at Canterbury Cathedral at the age of 7. Later he attended the Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys, and after receiving instruction in piano and organ, Trevor began working as a church organist. At the age of 15, he began to play the harpsichord, and at the age of 19, he was the winner of the Foundation Scholarship at the Royal College of Music to study the organ. He also studied harpsichord and won many prizes for both instruments.
Pinnock toured Europe with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields as a harpsichordist. In 1966, he made his London debut at the Royal Festival Hall along with the Galliard Harpsichord Trio. Trevor co-founded the trio with Stephen Preston on flute and Anthony Pleeth on cello. The solo harpsichord debut by Trevor was in 1968 at the Purcell Room, London.
In November 1972, the Galliard Trio expanded to become The English Concert. Pinnock also founded The Classical Band in New York in 1989. From 1991–1996, Pinnock was artistic director and principal conductor of the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, while in 2000, Maxim Vengerov and Trevor Pinnock toured together.
As a guest conductor, Pinnock has appeared with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the City of Birmingham, San Francisco, Boston, and Detroit symphony orchestras, Saint Paul, Los Angeles, and Mito.
