Toshi Reagon Information
Toshi Reagon (January 27, 1964) is an American funk, rock, gospel, blues, folk musician, producer, composer, and curator. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia. Reagon cites Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Kiss from the '70s and traditional Blues artists like Big Mama Thornton, Howlin' Wolf, and Big Bill Broonzy. When she was only 17, Lenny Kravitz asked Reagon to be the opening act for his first world tour.
She has performed alongside such artists as Ani DiFranco, Elvis Costello, and Meshell Ndegeocello since then. Justice, Ragon's debut album, was released by Flying Fish Records in 1990. Many solo albums later, her most recent being December 2018's SpiritLand, she has continued to make music. BIGLovely, her band, first played in September of 1996. BIGLovely is an affectionate nickname for Reagon's lover that she uses in a letter.
Catharine Russell plays the mandolin and acoustic guitar, Adam Widoff plays the electric guitar, Robert "Chicken" Burke plays drums, and Judith Casselberry plays acoustic guitar and sings. Jen Leigh, Ann Klein, Debbie Robinson, Allison Miller, Kismet Lyles, and Stephanie McKay are also available as replacements. The world premiere of Reagon's rock opera Parable of the Sower, adapted from the novel by Octavia Butler, took place at the NYU Abu Dhabi Arts Center in the fall of 2017.
