Michael Anthony “Tony” Orlando Cassavitis (April 3, 1944) is professionally known as Tony Orlando. He is an American songwriter, singer, actor, producer, and music executive from New York City, New York. Tony’s music is defined as pop. During his teenage years, Tony’s family moved to Union City, New Jersey, and then to Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey. He began his official musical career at the age of 15, with a doo-wop group named The Five Gents. He recorded many demos with the group and soon caught the attention of music publisher and producer Don Kirshner.
Kirshner hired Orlando for songwriting and Neil Sedaka, Toni Wine, Barry Mann, Bobby Darin, Carole King, Connie Francis, and a few more. By 16, his first success came when he released two hits named “Bless You” and “Halfway To Paradise.” Both of the songs charted in the US and UK. Some of his other early hits include “Bubbled Under,” “Chills,” “Shirley,” “I’ll Be There,” “I Was A Boy (When You Needed A Man).”
Tony released many notable studio albums throughout his career such as Bless You and 11 Other Great Hits (1961), Make Believe (1969), Before Dawn (1973), Tony Orlando (1978), I Got Rhythm (1979), Livin’ for the Music (1980), Halfway to Paradise: The Complete Epic Masters 1961-1964 (2006), and Bless You (2014).
Tony Orlando’s first TV appearance was on the series Chico and the Man in 1967. He appeared in the 1981 TV movie 300 Miles For Stephanie, along with Cosby Show (its first season), children’s animated series Oswald, and an episode of MADtv.
