Tom Russell Information
Thomas George "Tom" Russell is an American musician and singer-songwriter from Los Angeles. His music is classified as folk, country, and Americana. Russell graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and spent a year teaching in Ibadan, Nigeria. He also spent some time in Norway and Spain, playing music at the circus in Puerto Rico. Russell started his professional career in the 1970s. He began playing strip bars along Skid Row in Vancouver, British Columbia, and later relocated to Texas. He founded a band with the help of singer-pianist Patricia Hardin.
The duo was named Hardin & Russell and split in 1979. Russell drifted out from the music industry for almost a year. He began working as a cab driver in Queens, during which Russell met Robert Hunter of the Grateful Dead. After listening to the song "Gallo Del Cielo," Hunter invited Russell to join him on stage at New York's Bitter End. Later on, he opened for Hunter at the one Star Cafe. Russell founded another band named Tom Russell Band and released four albums.
As a solo artist, Russell released many notable studio albums such as Heart on a Sleeve, Road to Bayamon, Box of Visions, The Long Way Around, The Man from God Knows Where, Modern Art, Blood, and Candle Smoke, The Rose of Roscrae, and Old Songs Yet To Sing. He also released two live albums: Lost Angels Of Lyon (as Tom Russell band) and Aztec Jazz (with The Norwegian Wind Ensemble). Russell has worked with many labels throughout his career, such as Shout! Factory and Frontera Records.
