Todd Carey Information
Todd Carey is an American record producer, singer, and songwriter. He was born in Winnetka, Illinois. Carey's passion for music began when he was a kid; he cites Elvis Presley and The Beatles as major influences. He saved up for a guitar and eventually bought one, but he only became serious about learning to play years later. Carey continued to play throughout middle and high school, and he and some pals formed a band in his senior year of high school called "Heart of Gold."
Named after the Grateful Dead song of the same name, this jam band also took cues from the likes of the Dave Matthews Band and Phish. After finishing high school at New Trier in Winnetka, Carey would use a scholarship to study jazz guitar at USC and English at USC. Not long after enrolling at USC, he joined forces with fellow students to start a new jam band called Telepathy.
After five years of performing at small venues, Telepathy was invited to play in major Los Angeles venues like the Knitting Factory, the House of Blues, and The Mint. The independent record label Kufala Recordings in Telepathy's home country of Hawaii announced that the band was set to release and EP and three live albums. During his stay at USC, he participated in A Mighty Wind, which was shot on location in and around the campus.
