Thornton Wilder's drama The Skin of Our Teeth was honored with the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It premiered at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut, on October 15, 1942, and then transferred to the Plymouth Theatre in New York City on November 18, 1942. Michael Myerberg was in charge of production, Elia Kazan was in charge of direction, and Mary Percy Schenck was in charge of clothes. The story of the Antrobus family in the made-up community of Excelsior, New Jersey, is the focus of this three-act allegory about the history of humanity.
This epic comedy-drama is often considered one of the most heterodox of the great American comedies because it deviates so drastically from the norms of the theater. George and Maggie Antrobus (Anthropos, "human" or "person"), and their children, Henry and Gladys, are the play's primary protagonists. Also featured are the Antrobuses' maid Sabina (in acts one and Three) and a beauty queen temptress (act two). The drama is set in the present day, but it is replete with anachronisms from the Stone Age. The characters ' archetypal roles are stressed because of their similarities to Biblical and classical figures.
