The Ophelias Information
American rock band The Ophelias hail from Cincinnati, Ohio. When the five friends first crossed paths, they played the role of "token women" in different male-fronted bands in their respective hometowns. Due to the members' diverse musical upbringings (anything from garage rock to surf to opera), the band's first rehearsal was a whirlwind of unanticipated musical combinations. In this setting, the band realized their chemistry stemmed not from a common musical reference point but rather from the freedom from conventional constraints that came with having a supporting role.
At a Fourth of July festival in Cincinnati, Yoni Wolf, of Why? first caught the band's attention in 2015. The Ophelias were four young ladies performing on a makeshift stage. Their music was described as "a blend between the Velvet Underground, underground British psych-noise-folk-rock from the late '90s / early 2000s (think Hood, Movietone, Crescent), and a softer side of punk."
Creature Native, Wolf's first full-length album, was selected for inclusion in Joyful Noise Recordings' White Label Series. The first book in the series, Creature Native, was published. The Ophelias on the road in support of their latest album, Low Anthem, this past summer of 2018. The group's second studio album, Almost (produced by Yoni Wolf), was released in July of 2018; the video for the lead single, "Fog," premiered on New Noise Magazine, while the song itself premiered on Stereogum.
