The Marriage of Figaro is a comedic opera presented in four acts, in Italian. It was composed in 1786 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and written by Lorenzo Da Ponte. The Marriage of Figaro first premiered on May 1, 1786, in Vienna at the theatre of Burgtheater. The opera’s text is based upon stage comedy of 1784 by Pierre Beaumarchais, La Folle Journee, ou le Mariage de Figaro (“The Mad Day, or The Marriage of Figaro”). The opera was scored for two trumpets, strings, timpani, two horns, two bassoons, two clarinets, two oboes, and two flutes.
The opera’s plot occurs over one day, in Count Almaviva’s castle near Seville, Spain. Dr. Bartolo seeks revenge against Figaro for preventing his plans to marry Rosina, as Rosina is a countess. At the same time, Count Almaviva attempts to enforce droit du seigneur on Figaro, his head servant-staff.
