The Little Mermaid is an American ballet show performed by Hamburg Ballet Director and Chief Choreographer John Neumeier. He creates a remarkable rendition of Hans Christian Andersen's narrative by combining dance, dramatic storytelling, and spectacle. This ballet, which features Neumeier's choreography, sets, and costumes, is as theatrical as it is dance, revealing the depths of the choreographer's imagination. Neumeier, a Milwaukee native who has spent nearly his entire career in Europe, began his dancing and choreographic careers at Stuttgart Ballet, where he received his training in Copenhagen and London. He became director of the Frankfurt Ballet in 1969 after only six years there, causing a stir with his reimaginings of classics such as The Nutcracker and Romeo and Juliet.
Neumeier became director and principal choreographer of the Hamburg Ballet four years later, and in 1978 he built a school that presently provides more than 70% of the company's dancers. He has choreographed over 140 ballets for his own company and the American Ballet Theatre, The National Ballet of Canada, and other companies across Europe. His many accolades include dance and art prizes from the United States, Denmark, Japan, Russia, France, Germany, and various periodicals.
