The Life and Times of Malcolm X Information
Opera composer Anthony Davis and librettist Thulani Davis collaborated on X, The Life and Times of Malcolm X, based on a narrative by Christopher Davis. The life of civil rights activist Malcolm X is the inspiration for the opera. It had its full-scale debut on October 9, 1985, at the American Music Theater Festival in Philadelphia, PA.
It was then altered and extended for a September 28, 1986, performance at the New York City Opera. Actors Eric Salzman and Marjorie Samoff of the American Musical Theater Festival (AMTF) and Beverly Sills of the New York City Opera (NYCO) had an arrangement that the latter would be the global premiere.
This epic piece was perfectly staged in June 2006 by the Oakland Opera Theater. On May 12, 2010, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture hosted an abbreviated performance by the New York City Opera. Premiering on November 3, 2023, it is set to take place during the 2023–24 season at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
The notable roles of the opera include Malcolm (baritone), Elijah/Street (high tenor), Louise/Betty (soprano), Ella (mezzo-soprano), Reginald (bass-baritone), and Young Malcolm Little (boy soprano).
