The Barber of Seville Information
The Barber of Seville, sometimes known as The Useless Precaution, is a two-act opera buffa by Gioachino Rossini with an Italian libretto by Cesare Sterbini. The French farce The Barber of Seville (1775) by Pierre Beaumarchais inspired the libretto. At the Teatro Argentina in Rome, with designs by Angelo Toselli, Rossini's opera, Almaviva, or sia L'inutile precauzione, had its première on 20 February 1816,.
Rossini's Barber of Seville is widely regarded as a hilarious musical masterpiece, often referred to as the "opere buffe" (the opera buffa) of all operas. Even after two centuries, many people still find it enjoyable.
This opera by Rossini narrates the plot of the first of three plays by the French playwright Pierre Beaumarchais about the titular barber Figaro, who is both cunning and entrepreneurial. Based on the second half of the Beaumarchais trilogy, Mozart's opera The Marriage of Figaro was created thirty years earlier in 1786.
The operatic repertory would be incomplete without this work. Due to the lack of actual contraltos, coloratura mezzo-sopranos have traditionally performed Rosina; however, coloratura sopranos like Marcella Sembrich, Maria Callas, and Roberta Peters have filled the part on occasion in recent years. Ewa Podles, a famous contralto, made her theatrical debut as Rosina.
