Tayari Jones Information
Tayari Jones (November 30, 1970) is an author of four novels. She is from Atlanta, Georgia, and graduated from Spelman College, the University of Iowa, and Arizona State University. Tayari is a current member of the English faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences at Emory University. She was also appointed an Andrew Dickson White Professor-at-large at Cornell University.
Her most recent publication is An American Marriage, which was a 2018 Oprah's Book Club Selection. The novel won the 2019 Women's Prize for Fiction. Leaving Atlanta was the first novel by Tayari that is a three-voiced coming-of-age story that was set against the backdrop of the 1979-81 Atlanta Child Murders of. This novel was based on her experience as a child in Atlanta during that period and won the 2003 Hurston/Wright Legacy Award for Debut Fiction. Aletha Spann of 30Nineteen Productions has purchased the film, which is based on this novel.
The Untelling, Warner Books, 2005, is another novel by Tayari, which is also set in Atlanta. It is described as Jones's "deep-felt second novel" in Publishers Weekly. The book was awarded the Lillian Smith Book Award in 2005 and was followed by Silver Sparrow, Jones's third novel. It was published by Algonquin Books in 2011 and was declared to be an American Booksellers Association number 1 "Indie Next" pick.
An American Marriage, her latest novel, was published by Algonquin on February 6, 2018. It is expected that Jones is producing a film adaptation of the book. The story was included on the summer 2018 reading list by President Barack Obama.
Jones has earned the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award for Debut Fiction, United States Artist Fellowship, Lifetime Achievement Award in Fine Arts from the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and a few more.
