Tacoma City Ballet Information
The Jan Collum School of Classical Ballet and the Concert Ballet Group of Tacoma were created by Miss Jan Collum in 1955. It is the mission of the School and the Company to teach and perform classical ballets to the highest possible standards. Thirty dancers now make up the Concert Ballet Group of Tacoma, which began with six dancers. Balletacoma, formerly known as the Concert Ballet Group of Tacoma, became a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Corporation in 1965. The Balletacoma Company, directed by Miss Jan Collum, established a national and international reputation for classical ballet excellence during the next three decades. After renaming themselves, Tacoma City Ballet in 1995, the School and the Company were both incorporated into a single 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization.
There has been a regular performance season at the Concert Ballet Group of Tacoma since 1955, and touring works to other area cities. When the Pantages Theater opened in 1983, Miss Jan Collum's ultimate aim of having her company and a live professional orchestra perform annually in a professional theater was accomplished. Since 1983, this has been a reoccurring custom. It has been in the lovely Merlino Art Center since 1983 that Tacoma City Ballet has called home. The Jan Collum Ballroom Theater in the Merlino Art Center is a fully equipped black box theater that will be used for community performances in the future. The Tacoma City Dance performs, teaches, and rehearses classical ballet in this magnificent historical tower, one of Tacoma's architectural treasures.
