SMU Mustangs Womens Volleyball Information
The SMU Mustangs women's volleyball team competes in NCAA Division I at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. The program started its debut season in 1996. Samantha Erger is its present head coach. Lisa Seifert managed the program from 1996–2021, serving as its first head coach. With 415 victories, she closed off her tenure second-most of any SMU coach.
The Mustangs of SMU Volleyball reached the quarterfinals of the 2016 NCAA Tournament with a three-set victory over the Aggies of Texas A&M (25-23, 25-23, 25-18). First year to get to the second round, where they faced the University of Texas Longhorns; this was the Mustang's second year to qualify for the tournament. Having lost to Purdue in the first round of the NCAA tournament 2015, SMU became the first American Athletic Conference Team to win an NCAA match.
Another successful season was 2019. For the Mustangs, it produced a west-side AAC title. The Mustangs attended the AAC tournament following their side of the conference's triumph, only to be swept by UCF. The Mustangs did not train for five months, and all volleyball activities were stopped in March 2020. Their 2020 autumn season was shelved until the spring of 2021.
