African American composers and performers are the focus of this unique chamber orchestra, creating a showcase of musical diversity that will appeal to listeners of all ages. In 1983, American conductor and music instructor Anne Lundy established the Scott Joplin Chamber Orchestra as part of Houston's Community Music Center.
The SJCO's goal was to introduce works by Black artists to audiences that may not have had exposure to symphonic music before. After playing "Free at Last" at the CMCH's Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration in 1986, the Scott Joplin Chamber Orchestra received national notice when featured on Dan Rather's CBS News.
Since then, the Scott Joplin Chamber Orchestra has played at numerous prestigious events, such as Super Bowl XXXIII, where they performed the "Star Spangled Banner" alongside Beyonce. Even William Grant Still's daughter joined the festivities to honor her father's centennial that year.
