It was launched by Jill Smokler in Baltimore, Maryland.
Smokler published a book in April 2012, which was a companion book by the name “Confessions of a Scary Mommy.” This book came out to be a New York Times bestseller. Smokler established a 501(c)3 non-profit in 2013 to raise money for those families that we're unable to afford a Thanksgiving dinner. Scary Mommy also aired on Pop, a television network.
In the year 2014, Scary Mommy won its first Webby Award in the category of "Family/Parenting." Later, in 2015 and 2018, the site again won the same award. Some Spider Studios acquired the site in February 2015, whereas Smokler remained as the part of this company serving as a chief content officer. After the shifting of ownership, Scary Mommy brought an addition to the company, in-house studio, along with video producers, contributors, editors, and staff writers.
Scary Mommy became the first parenting channel in February 2018 on Snapchat's Discover feature. When the site reached 80 million monthly unique visitors, Smokler left in May 2018. Scary Mommy also has a Mommy Confessions feature. This feature allows the users to post a message anonymously relevant to motherhood. The site also develops a lullaby singing competition show by the name “Lullaby League.” It is hosted by Jim O'Heir.
